lexcyphersbasket replied to your post: I never think Id ever be bothered by a cosplayer…
Wait isnt that the Genies second biggest thing to do cosplaying as famous people for quotes in the movies and show? ;p
Yes but Aladdin vs Genie is that the Genie is genuine about his ‘cosplays’ Aladdin put on a ‘cosplay’ in order get the attention and affection from people around him. The Genie did not use his ‘cosplay’ to act out desires of the character he was pretending to be, he was using the character as a reference for a joke or a situation that other people can understand. Aladdin became a much more likeable person when he showed his bravery to not be a pretend figure anymore, and be his own person.
I never think I’d ever be bothered by a cosplayer that accurately looks like the character they’re cosplaying … but when you start making the character dress up as school girls and do fetish acts to get attention on tumblr… You are not makeing friends for the right reasons… isn’t that what the Genie ment by

Smash smashes her way onto the Cosplay Scene
The Monster High Facebook recently debuted a series of pictures where epically talented Canadian cosplayer Smash resurrected her own version of Rochelle Goyle’s Scaris outfit. Get ready, Gory Gazette readers, because we tracked down the freaky-fabulous Smash for a 1-on-1, where she answers some of our most burning questions!
We absolutely love that you go by your freaky-fab nickname, “Smash!” Can you tell us where the name originated from?
When I was younger I loved the sound of breaking glass or porcelain, so it developed as a result of that and a derivation of my real name :)
You’re obviously totes creative, where do you get inspiration for your furrrocious ideas?
I find my inspiration everywhere! In particular with costumes, I might do some research online, reference books, watch any media related to the character, and sometimes of the costume requires a prop or piece that is unconventional I may just wander around a hardware or surplus store to see if any unconventional materials call out to me. I enjoy adapting everyday items and giving them a second life!
Which MH student body do you relate to the most?
Frankie Stein. She is quirky and silly things always happen to her, I can totes relate. Also, I have different colored eyes like her (one more green, one more blue) although mine are less striking than hers :)
You must work your fingers to the bone (your costumes are so intricate)! How long does it usually take you to stitch them together?
This really varies. Including concept sketching, the time it takes to source materials in stores, design and construction, and then applying the makeup and taking photos before attending an event the time varies. Toralei took me just under 100 hours to create. The others vary between 30-100 hours. If I need to digitally illustrate and then make silk screens to create textile patterns for the clothing pieces, this can add a huge chunk of time.
How long have you been involved with cosplay?
Playing dress up was a big part of my childhood. My mom is a great seamstress and would make us costumes whenever we needed them so we always had a big trunk of costumes to play with. Although that isn’t technically cosplay, it is how my love for costumes started :)
Can you offer any creeperific advice for guys and ghouls looking to get into the cosplay world?
For me, cosplay has two important parts. One is that I get to create a living version of a fictional character by constructing a costume that I put a lot of hard work in to and am proud to share with others. The second part is being able to go out and have fun with your friends who share the same interests! I would talk to your friends and see if they are interested in going to an event where people will be cosplaying. It can be fun to coordinate costumes with a group of people and if you are attending a con or something similar for the first time, it can be much less intimidating. If you don’t have friends that are interested, there are a lot of online cosplay communities that encourage and give advice to new cosplayers :)
Our beastie, Ghoulia, had an UHHHn-believeable time at Comic-Con this year (she loved meeting a few of the newest monsters to haunt the halls). What was your favorite part about the weekend?
Aside from wearing my costumes, my favorite part of Comic-Con was definitely hanging out in the Monster High booth where I meet the whole team that works on MH and also attending the first ever Monster High panel!
What an experience :) I really hope I can attend next year, I can only image how much more amazing it will be the second year! What is one item in your closet that you just can’t live without?
My favorite high top sneakers, Super Shifts in Blue Python by Heyday Footwear! If you could recruit any new monster to MH, who would you want to see enroll? I’d love to see someone from the Cthulhu family. Tentacles are cool! At MH, Headless Headmistress Bloodgood always teaches us to “Be Yourself. Be Unique. Be a Monster” and embrace what makes us individuals.
What is one freaky flaw that makes you totally unique?
Sometimes I have a hard time remembering things people have just told me and ask to them to repeat it more than once. It might seem like I’m not paying attention but I can’t help it :) Dying to learn more? Check out her official website!
Happy Halloween, Tumblr!
I swear it wasn’t me… it was the crown!
